PISA Special Report: Problem Solving April 2014

PISA 2012 - Problemen ebazpen digitala - Eguneroko Gaitasunak, teoriaren azpitik

1. Aire girotua programatzea. Ikasleak aire girotua programatzeko gai izan behar du, horretarako argibiderik jaso gabe. Probaren lehenbiziko galderan, alde batera eta bestera mugitu behar ditu gailuaren hiru irristagailuak, jakiteko zerk eragiten duen tenperatura aldatzea eta zerk hezetasun maila igo edota jaistea. Bigarren galderan, bestalde, ikasleak gaitasuna erakutsi behar du tenperatura eta hezetasun maila orekatua lortzeko, gehienez ere lau urratsetan.

2. Treneko txartela erostea. Ikasleak tren geltoki bateko makina baten aurrean irudikatu behar du bere burua. Lehenik, txartel arrunt bat erosi beharko du eskualdeko trenean bi bidaia egiteko. Gero, aukera merkeena bilatzeko eskatuko zaio, hiriko metroan lau aldiz ibiltzeko egun berean. Estudiantea izaki, tarifa murriztua hautatu beharko du.

3. Errepideetako zirkulazioa. Auzo bateko errepide sarearen mapa bat jasoko du ikasleak, eta leku batetik bestera joateko bide motz edota bizkorrena aukeratu beharko du. Tarte bakoitza ibilgailuan egiteko beharrezkoak diren minutuak ikus ditzake ikasleak mapan bertan; baita toki horien kokapen zehatza eta bideen bihurguneak ere.

4. Garbiketa robotaren jokaera. Garbiketa robot baten funtzionamenduari buruz hausnartu beharko du ikasleak. Xurgagailu automatikoa egongela batean garbitzen ageri den animazio baten bidez, robotak oztopoen aurrean nola erantzuten duen igarri beharko du; hainbat aukera izango ditu.

5. MP3 erreproduzitzailea. Musika gordetzeko MP3 erreproduzitzaile batekin elkarreragitea dakar ariketa horrek. Ikasleak une oro eta ahalik eta azkarrena egokitu beharko du MP3a ordenagailuak ematen dizkion baldintzetara: bolumen, soinu eta nota apalen maila jakin batera, kasurako. Gailuaren botoi bakoitzaren eginkizun zehatzak ere ulertu beharko ditu.

6Urtebetetze jaia. Ikasleak zortzi lagun eseri beharko ditu urtebetetze jai bateko mahai baten bueltan, betiere baldintza guztiak betez: esate baterako, Ana eta Alvaro elkarren alboan jarriz baina ez Bea eta Bruno dauden tokitik gertu...

A modern killer

Dementia is a devastating condition for which there is no cure available. Care is costly, financially and emotionally. The cost for health systems is likely to rise in ageing societies. The condition damages the brain, and leads to a decline in a person’s functional and cognitive capabilities.

Eleberri bat nola jo

Eleberri bat nola jo

Gaur estreinatuko dute Euskal Herrian 'Mussche' ikuskizuna Kirmen Uribe idazleak eta Wim Mertens musikariak

Ondarroarraren nobela oinarri hartuta sortu ditu kanta batzuk konpositoreak.

— Zenbaitek uste du geure burua egiten goazela, eta neurri batean egia da. Baina, bestalde, egin egiten gaituzte. Ni neu egin egin naute, hasieran gurasoek eta gero bizitzan zehar ezagutu ditudan pertsonek, eta zortea izan dut. Baina batzuetan iraganak pisu handiegia du gure bizitzetan, ez da gauza bera mihise zuri batean margotzea edo aurretik belztuta dagoen batean. Zaila da hor koloreak ateratzea.

        — Mutil koskorra zinela irten zinen Bilbotik eta ez zara geroztik itzuli. Gurasoen erabakia zuzena izan zela uste al duzu?

        — Ez zegoen beste aukerarik.

'Pierrot izeneko automata' Bernardo Atxaga Arriagan

Atxaga Arriaga antzokian

Joxe Anjel Arbelaitzen 'Leku hutsak, hitz beteak' lana.

Adan eta bizitza

Gaixotu zen Adan paradisua utzi eta aurreneko neguan,
eta eztulka, buruko minez, hogeita hemeretziko sukarraz,
negarrari eman zion Magdalenak gerora emango bezala,
eta Evagana zuzenduz "hil egingo naiz" esan zion oihuka,
"gaizki nago, maite, hilurren, ez dakit zer gertatzen zaidan".
Harritu egin zen Eva hitz haiekin, hil, hilurren, gaizki, maite,
eta berriak iruditu zitzaizkion, hizkuntza arrotz batekoak,
eta ezpain artean ibili zituen maiz, hil, hilurren, gaizki, maite,
harik eta zehazki ulertzen zituela iruditu zitzaion unerarte.
Ordurako sendatua zegoen Adan, eta poz pozik zebilen.
Paradisuaz geroko lehen gertaera hark segida luzea izan zuen ,
eta lehengoez gain, hil, hilurren, gaizki, maite, Adan zein Evak
hitz berriak ikasi behar izan zituzten, min, lan, bakardade, poz
eta beste hamaika, denbora, neke, algara, eder, ikara, kemen;
hiztegia hazten zenarekin batera, zimurtuz joan zitzaien azala.
Zahartu zen erabat Adan, sentitu zuen hurbil heriotzaren ordua,
eta Evarekin elkarrizketa sakon bat izateko gogoa sortu zitzaion;
"Eva", esan zion, "ez zen ezbehar bat izan paradisuaren galtzea;
oinazeak oinaze, minak min, gure Abelen zoritxarra halako zoritxar,
bizi izan duguna izan da, zentzurik nobleenean esanda, bizitza".
Adanen hilobi atarian malko arruntak ixuri ziren, gatz eta urezkoak,
lurrera erortzerakoan hiazinto edo arrosa alerik eman ez zutenak,
eta Kain izan zen, paradoxaz, negarrez bortitzen puskatu zena;
Gero Evak irribarre xamurrez gogoratu zuen Adanen lehen gripea
eta halaxe, lasai, etxera joan eta salda beroa hartu zuten, eta txokolatea.

The American Medical Association officially declared obesity a disease in June 2013 (AMA, 2013).

The weight of nations

The growing rate of obesity is one of the most significant health trends in
OECD countries and increasingly, in Brazil, Russia, India and China, the “BRIC”
countries. Perhaps surprisingly, this health trend is also strongly linked to lower
educational attainment – both as a cause and as an effect.

A Collaborative Approach Against Obesity Schools

+ Teach healthy habits
+ Offer nutritious food options
+ Create opportunities for physical activity

Parents
+ Embrace a healthy lifestyle
+ Provide healthy foods at home
+ Encourage physical activity

Government
+ Develop prevention policies
+ Regulate the food industry
+ Monitor and track BMI

Civil
Society
& NGOs

+ Advocate for obesity prevention measures
+ Disseminate information
+ Monitor stakeholder activities

Private
Sector

+ Develop nutritious and tasty food products
+ Refrain from marketing unhealthy foods to children

How old are the teachers?

More than one-third of male primary school teachers in OECD countries are now over 50 years old.

Across OECD countries, the average age of secondary school teachers has increased by one month
every year in the last decade.

Only a few countries have managed to develop policies which lower the average age
of teachers significantly.

Increasing the numbers of female teachers no longer lowers the average age,
as the female teaching workforce is ageing faster than its male counterpart.

How old are the teachers?

The teaching workforce continues to age at a high pace, skewing the age distribution
among teachers, in some countries quite dramatically. This may have important consequences for teacher
recruitment, salary and retraining costs, as well as for the adoption of innovation, and may distance
teachers from the lives of their students. Governments should intensify their efforts to make teaching an
attractive career choice and prepare for the need for mass replacements in the coming years.

women’s absence in STEM occupations

Results from the first Survey of Adult Skills, a product of the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), found that gender differences in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) have narrowed considerably among 16-24 year-olds, and that, among younger adults, there is, on average, no gender difference in proficiency in numeracy or literacy. In fact, in those countries where there is a difference between young men’s and young women’s levels of literacy, it is young women who score higher.

Are boys and girls equally prepared for life?

Girls outperform boys in reading in all countries and economies by the equivalent of one year of school.

• In most countries and economies, girls underperform boys in mathematics; and among the highest-achieving students, the gender gap in favour of boys is even wider.

• The gender gap in mathematics performance mirrors the gender gap in students’ drive,
motivation and self-beliefs.

• Boys and girls tend to benefit equally when they are perseverant and motivated to learn, and have confidence in their abilities to learn mathematics. Consequently, the performance of both boys and girls suffers at the same rate when they lack motivation to learn and confidence in their own abilities.

Even at 15, boys and girls already have different ideas about their career paths.

The gender gaps in mathematics performance has largely remained stable over successive PISA assessments – which is not a good sign, considering that PISA results also show that both boys and girls can perform at the highest levels. More troubling, still, is the fact that the gender gap extends to students’ attitudes towards learning mathematics, which has repercussions in life well beyond school. Shrinking these gender gaps requires a concerted effort by parents and educators to challenge and eliminate gender stereotypes and bolster girls’ beliefs in themselves.

Closing the gender gap

Students’ choices today shape tomorrow’s skills pool. Estudios-Mercado laboral

Students perceive their choices as purely individual decisions. And they make their choice with the optimistic belief that they will succeed in life, whatever the demands of the labour market.

(...) One of the most important dimensions in choice patterns is gender. The rapid increase in the number of female students has not yet altered the gender imbalances in certain fields of study, and on the contrary seems to have deepened them. Only 14% of female students enter a sciences programme, in contrast with 39% of male students. In contrast, education, health and welfare paint the opposite picture.
Choices made at age 18 are important, but they do not condemn individuals or countries.

(..)students have their own preferences when choosing a field of study and countries must cope with the outcomes of seemingly irrational choices.

What are tertiary students choosing to study?
Studying a bachelor’s programme in the field of social sciences (and especially in business and administration) seems to be the preferred choice of students in OECD countries. There is still room to improve gender imbalances and to recruit more
talented female students to science-related fields.

Who are the school truants?

Across OECD countries, 18% of students skipped classes at least once in the two weeks

prior to the PISA test, and 15% of students skipped a day of school or more over

the same period.

Few students in high-performing school systems skip classes or days of school.

For students in OECD countries, skipping classes is associated with a 32-point lower

score in mathematics, while skipping days of school is associated with a 52-point

lower score.

Truancy is observed among all students, whether advantaged or disadvantaged.

Results from PISA 2012 show that playing truant is negatively
associated with student performance. Results also show that students are less
likely to play truant when they are engaged with school. Parents and teachers
can nurture students’ engagement with and at school by holding high expectations
for their children/students and by being more engaged, themselves, in their
children’s/students’ lives.
