How much time do students spend in the classroom?

Education Indicators in focus

• Students in OECD countries are expected to receive a total of 7 751 hours of instruction on average during their primary and lower secondary education – the bulk of that time is compulsory.
• In general, the higher the level of education, the greater the number of instruction hours a year.
• Reading, mathematics and science take up around 50% of the compulsory curricular time in primary education but only 40% at the lower secondary level.
• The wide variation in instruction hours across OECD countries suggests there is little consensus on the most effective policies related to school time.

The number of instruction hours pupils are expected to receive varies significantly between countries but the total time matters less than how the time is spent, on which subjects, and the strength of the curriculum. Reading and mathematics have the largest share at the primary level, while time for science, social studies and modern foreign languages increases in lower secondary school, and technology is given relatively little emphasis at both levels.

The 10 countries with the highest instruction time have a mean PISA score for mathematics, which is 20 score-points below that of the 10 countries with the lowest amount of instruction time.

Student motivation is crucial for students to be ready to learn,both in and outside of school. School systems can promote student motivation by holding high expectations for all and by promoting policies and practices

that are inclusive.

Se ha comprobado que existe "una correlación muy fuerte" entre el nivel de inglés y de euskera que adquieren los alumnos y el número de horas en las que están expuestos a esas lenguas.

Los jóvenes en el punto de mira 

 

Las generaciones más jóvenes no solo tendrán quehacer frente a productos, servicios y mercados

financieros cada vez más complejos, sino que probablemente tendrán que soportar más riesgos

financieros que sus padres cuando sean adultos. En concreto, es probable que tengan que asumir

una mayor responsabilidad en la planificación de sus propios ahorros e inversiones para la

jubilación y la cobertura de sus necesidades de asistencia médica; y tendrán que manejar

productos financieros más sofisticados y variados.

Educación financiera en los centros

Los escolares también puede abordar las cuestiones financieras inmediatas a las que estos se

enfrentan. Los alumnos suelen ser consumidores de servicios financieros desde una edad

temprana. No es inusual que tengan cuentas con acceso a servicios de pago on line

o que utilicen teléfonos móviles (con distintas opciones de pago) antes de convertirse en adolescentes, y está claro que las destrezas relacionadas con la competencia financiera les resultarán beneficiosas

cuando utilicen dichos productos.

 PISA assessment of the financial literacy of students - In 2012, the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) made financial literacy an optional component of its framework. PISA already tests the attainment of 15-year-olds in mathematics, reading and science across 65 countries. The financial literacy assessment due for release in the second half of 2014 will result in a unique international benchmark on the level of financial literacy of young people. The rich data collected will enable detailed investigations of the main factors associated with financial literacy levels and will help to identify policy measures that can be employed to improve levels in the future.

1. Aire girotua programatzea. Ikasleak aire girotua programatzeko gai izan behar du, horretarako argibiderik jaso gabe. Probaren lehenbiziko galderan, alde batera eta bestera mugitu behar ditu gailuaren hiru irristagailuak, jakiteko zerk eragiten duen tenperatura aldatzea eta zerk hezetasun maila igo edota jaistea. Bigarren galderan, bestalde, ikasleak gaitasuna erakutsi behar du tenperatura eta hezetasun maila orekatua lortzeko, gehienez ere lau urratsetan.

2. Treneko txartela erostea. Ikasleak tren geltoki bateko makina baten aurrean irudikatu behar du bere burua. Lehenik, txartel arrunt bat erosi beharko du eskualdeko trenean bi bidaia egiteko. Gero, aukera merkeena bilatzeko eskatuko zaio, hiriko metroan lau aldiz ibiltzeko egun berean. Estudiantea izaki, tarifa murriztua hautatu beharko du.

3. Errepideetako zirkulazioa. Auzo bateko errepide sarearen mapa bat jasoko du ikasleak, eta leku batetik bestera joateko bide motz edota bizkorrena aukeratu beharko du. Tarte bakoitza ibilgailuan egiteko beharrezkoak diren minutuak ikus ditzake ikasleak mapan bertan; baita toki horien kokapen zehatza eta bideen bihurguneak ere.

4. Garbiketa robotaren jokaera. Garbiketa robot baten funtzionamenduari buruz hausnartu beharko du ikasleak. Xurgagailu automatikoa egongela batean garbitzen ageri den animazio baten bidez, robotak oztopoen aurrean nola erantzuten duen igarri beharko du; hainbat aukera izango ditu.

5. MP3 erreproduzitzailea. Musika gordetzeko MP3 erreproduzitzaile batekin elkarreragitea dakar ariketa horrek. Ikasleak une oro eta ahalik eta azkarrena egokitu beharko du MP3a ordenagailuak ematen dizkion baldintzetara: bolumen, soinu eta nota apalen maila jakin batera, kasurako. Gailuaren botoi bakoitzaren eginkizun zehatzak ere ulertu beharko ditu.

6Urtebetetze jaia. Ikasleak zortzi lagun eseri beharko ditu urtebetetze jai bateko mahai baten bueltan, betiere baldintza guztiak betez: esate baterako, Ana eta Alvaro elkarren alboan jarriz baina ez Bea eta Bruno dauden tokitik gertu...

¿Los jóvenes de 15 años son creativos

a la hora de resolver problemas?

 

Que un estudiante obtenga buenos resultados en materias escolares básicas

no garantizabuenos resultados en resolución de problemas. En Australia, Brasil, Corea, Estados Unidos,Inglaterra (Reino Unido), Italia, Japón, Macao-China y Serbia, los estudiantes obtienenmejores resultados en la resolución de problemas, en promedio, que los estudiantes de otros países con un rendimiento similar en lectura, matemáticas y ciencias.

Christian Marclay: The Clock / Museo Guggenheim Bilbao

La sala Film & Video del Museo Guggenheim Bilbao está dedicada de forma permanente al videoarte y a la imagen en movimiento.

La primera videoinstalación programada para 2014 es El reloj (The Clock, 2010), del artista multidisciplinar Christian Marclay (1955, San Rafael, California), conocido desde finales de los años setenta por su exploración de las interrelaciones existentes entre el arte visual, el sonido, el cine y la performance.

En El reloj, el artista configura, mediante la edición de miles de secuencias procedentes de la televisión y el cine, un montaje de 24 horas que se desarrolla en tiempo real.

The American Medical Association officially declared obesity a disease in June 2013 (AMA, 2013).

The weight of nations

The growing rate of obesity is one of the most significant health trends in
OECD countries and increasingly, in Brazil, Russia, India and China, the “BRIC”
countries. Perhaps surprisingly, this health trend is also strongly linked to lower
educational attainment – both as a cause and as an effect.

How old are the teachers?

More than one-third of male primary school teachers in OECD countries are now over 50 years old.

Across OECD countries, the average age of secondary school teachers has increased by one month
every year in the last decade.

 Only a few countries have managed to develop policies which lower the average age
of teachers significantly.

 Increasing the numbers of female teachers no longer lowers the average age,
as the female teaching workforce is ageing faster than its male counterpart.

How old are the teachers?

The teaching workforce continues to age at a high pace, skewing the age distribution
among teachers, in some countries quite dramatically. This may have important consequences for teacher
recruitment, salary and retraining costs, as well as for the adoption of innovation, and may distance
teachers from the lives of their students. Governments should intensify their efforts to make teaching an
attractive career choice and prepare for the need for mass replacements in the coming years.

The ever growing generation gap in the classroom

Results from the first Survey of Adult Skills, a product of the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), found that gender differences in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) have narrowed considerably among 16-24 year-olds, and that, among younger adults, there is, on average, no gender difference in proficiency in numeracy or literacy. In fact, in those countries where there is a difference between young men’s and young women’s levels of literacy, it is young women who score higher.
