Teachers play a vital role in the lives of their students. They impart knowledge, provide pastoral care, act as role models and, above all, create an environment that’s conducive to learning. But teaching is fraught with numerous challenges that could lead to dissatisfaction; some teachers might decide to leave the profession entirely. In fact, in many countries around the world, high attrition rates are considered to be the most important factor contributing to the shortage of qualified science teachers.
So what is it that science teachers find satisfying about their work – satisfying enough that they want to keep teaching, despite any challenges they might face?
Teacher satisfaction is positively associated with factors known to improve students’ performance, such as collegial and positive school environments.
In other words, teachers’ satisfaction with their job and with the profession is both an aspect and a consequence of the school environment. As such, improving the learning experience for all students should also boost their teachers’ professional satisfaction.
Many children entering school today are likely to end up working in jobs that do not yet exist. Preparing students for these unchartered territories means that we not only have to make sure that they have the right technical capabilities but that we have to strengthen their emotional and social skills. Resilience, the individual capacity to overcome adverse circumstances and use them as sources for personal development, lies at the core of being able to successfully adapt to change and thus actively engage with our digital world.
The 2017 edition of the OECD Employment Outlook shows rising levels of socio-economic inequality driven, among other factors, by automation in the labour market. Understanding how to support resilience in students is essential not only for equipping them to thrive in a digital future but also for creating more equal opportunities in education and thereby strengthening social cohesion.
Despite being from among the poorest 25% in their country, one in four disadvantaged students is
academically resilient, meaning that he or she performs at Level 3 or above in all three core PISA subjects.
• In Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong (China), Ireland, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands,
Norway, Singapore, Slovenia and Viet Nam, more than 30% of disadvantaged 15-year-old students are
academically resilient.
• Across the vast majority of education systems, schools in which students have the greatest chances of being
academically resilient share some common attributes – chief among which is a good disciplinary climate,
meaning that students can focus in class and teachers can provide well-paced instruction.
The bottom line
Socio-economically disadvantaged students often encounter obstacles that prevent them from
developing their full potential at school – and thus limit their ability to contribute to society
and benefit from learning opportunities later on in life.
Removing these obstacles is one of the
principal goals for education systems. By ensuring that disadvantaged students learn in orderly
classrooms, and enriching their learning with purposeful extracurricular activities, schools can be at
the vanguard of creating more inclusive and fair societies.
International Women’s Day (March 8) is always a great occasion to focus on the obvious: that some women have made great strides in recent decades in fulfilling their potential; that there is still a long way to go before all women enjoy true equality in all societies. This month’s edition of PISA in Focus decided to dig a little deeper: given that girls are doing as well as, if not better than, boys in most core subjects at school, do boys and girls now expect to pursue similar careers when they become adults?
On average, girls are 11 percentage points more likely than boys to expect to work
as legislators, senior officials, managers and professionals.
• Only 5% of girls in OECD countries, on average, expect a career in engineering and
computing, while 18% of boys expect a career in these fields.
• In every OECD country, more girls than boys expect a career in health and medicine.
Thanks to girls’ great strides in education in recent years, today’s 15-year-old girls are, on average, more ambitious than boys. However, boys’ and girls’ decision to pursue certain careers, and make the most of their potential, is still driven by factors that are not necessarily related to their actual skills.
